Overview
After you've mastered the
Co-Pilot Program and earned your Co-Pilot License, you can up your game with
Advanced Navigation.
You'll learn the basics of visual navigation, chart-reading, dead-reckoning, and more advanced airspace operations. You'll also earn your
Airside Pass and crew
a more advanced
"Destination" flight.
It's the same fun, hands-on, itneractive class format as the Co-Pilot course. And it's still free.
What is this "Destination" Flight?
Your Co-Pilot Flight was 15 to 20 minutes - staying near the airport. It was very much a "local" flight experience.
The "Destination" Flight, on the other hand, leaves the local area - so that you can
navigate to a nearby airport. It is typically 20 to 30 minutes in each direction,
and might be something like Pitt Meadows to Abbotsford, or maybe Langley to Chilliwack.
For the
Destination flight, you will be matched up with a flight-partner. You will fly in one direction, and navigate in the other. The leg you fly will be similar to
your co-pilot flight. For the leg you navigate, you will be issuing navigation directions to your co-pilot.
Do I still get to fly?
Yes. You will fly in one direction and navigate in the other.
The
Destination flight differs from the
Co-Pilot Flight in two important ways:
- It's a longer flight - so you'll do more flying (20 to 30 minutes)
- When it's not your turn to fly, you'll be navigating: calculating bearings, issuing headings to the co-pilot, identifying waypoints, and helping make the in-flight decisions.
Can anyone participate?
The main pre-requisite for the Advanced Navigator course is that you have already earned your
Co-Pilot and
Co-Pilot Flight badges -
so you will need to take the
Co-Pilot Program course first.
We only run one Advanced Navigator course per year, so space is very limited. Everyone who is eligible and interested is entered into a "lottery" for the 20 available seats.
Of course, like everything else at Air Time Canada, you will need a free membership - in good standing - to participate in the course and flights.

How much does it cost?
The course and flights are
free.
That includes the classroom instruction, supplies, your "Navigator Kit", and all taxes.
You will be reponsible for your own transportation costs to/from the class, and any "destination" costs such as meals, lodging (if applicable), share of taxi rides, etc
Note: Fuel, for the airplane, is included in the free flight - our pilots are not permitted to ask you to share in fuel costs.
How do I sign up?
Log in to your Air Time Canada account to see your 'Account ID'. Once you have that, email Janine (janine@airfun.org) and let her know that you
would like to be entered into the "Advanced Navigator Lottery". Of course, you need to have completed the Co-Pilot Program - ground school and flight - before you can
be entered into the lottery.
